Eaton Employees Take Top Prize in Google App Contest

The Electrical Sector’s Software and Communications team in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, recently won the Google-sponsored Steel City Codefest competition by developing a unique energy usage application. Dubbed the “Power Rangers,” the team took first place in the city’s first coding competition that challenged 17 teams to develop creative, useful apps to benefit local residents, businesses, and visitors. The team worked independently − with the support of their leadership − and owns the application that is being fine-tuned and will be made available to the community soon.

The winning app, enLightened, enables energy, cost and environment-conscious individuals to share and compare their energy usage and cost data with others in different geographic areas. The Power Rangers team, comprised of Alex Hendershott, senior visual designer, Hao Gu, software architect, Demeng Chen, software engineer, and Gerry Ehlers, senior database developer, worked nonstop for 24 hours one weekend in Google’s Pittsburgh office to develop the app.

Staying Focused and Working Together
“The most unforgettable experience during this challenge was in the last few critical hours when we were able to stay focused and work together to execute the right strategy to deliver the system,” said Gu.

Apps were judged on how well they met a community need, technical sophistication, user-friendliness, and artistic merit. One of three winning teams, each Power Rangers team member received a Nexus 7 tablet during an award ceremony at the close of the Codefest.

“We’ve been working on rapid software development techniques,” said David Randall, user experience design lead for the Software and Communications team. “This team took that idea to the extreme and I think the results speak for themselves.”
